Men Under
26 Will Form Bulk of
Inductees for Remainder of Year
Washington (U.P.) House Military Affairs committee members
predicted today that barring unforeseen military emergencies, men
inducted into service for the rest of the year will consist largely of
those under 26.
They emphasized, however• that their forecast covered only men in
essential industries that older men and fathers in non-essential jobs
have no assurances and may pos-•l
sibly be called up in sizeable num-t
hers. I

mittee on draft deferments, said t
April 1 manpower figures submit-
ted by selective service indicated
that:
1. The nation still has a "tre-
mendous • ' manpower pool available
for military service. -"
2. Virtually all men inducted this
year will be non-fathers and young-
er men unless "strategic plans re.
quire unusually large calls in some
months." Men in non-essential work
are exceptions.
Ficture of Draft Situation
Costello gave this picture of the
draft situation: from now until Dec.
31, the armed forces will need I,-
385,000 men. Between 585.000 and
630,000 will be available by then
from the ranks of youths reaching
the draft age. The difference must
be made up from older men now in
or to be classified 1-A.
Costello said that as of April 1,
the 1-A classification included 2,-
259,000 of whom 750,000 were
non-fathers. Added to that were
648,000 men in 3-A and 3.B---627,.
000 of whom were fathers who
are being reclassified.
Aside from youths reaching the
draft age. selective service will con-
centrate on heretofore deferred
men in the under-26 bracket. Then
will come the older men, includ-
ing non-fathers, in non-essential
jobs. These are expected to fill the
bulk of the needs, indicating that
most men 26 and over in essential
jobs will not be called.
Depends on Military Situation
Costello emphasized again that
the entire outlook was dependent
on no great change in the military
situation from present estimates.
Col. Francis V. Keesling Jr. of
selective service reminded the
committee yesterday that the armed
forces must "necessaril anticipate
larger losses in some months than
in others," dependirg upon the
time schedule of strategic losses."
Thus. he said, it may be necessary
to call older men to make up re-
I placements during these months.
